Chapter 1 and 2 Summary

While reading the two chapters of the book, the author made very good points on how the instruction of students and how students in general rely on devices and screens, utilizing these mediums to better interact with each other and divulge in various social environments.  While reading, I came across one section that is very applicable within my own classroom.  Section, titled “What Does It Mean to Represent an Idea Visually”.  The section discusses the usage of visual media in the classroom, referring to medium such as Facebook and Instagram that use visual media to help foster learning. The section also talks about how “reading will not only encompass print but also images, sound, and motion as well” (CITATION).

This section is very important as I use visual media to aid my instruction within my own classroom. Instagram is one social media site I use to garner feedback on how my students infer and draw from the pictures and videos I post. Using visual and emotional ques, I am able to dig deeper into the thought process of my students and how they come to conclusions.  Also, it aids in seeing different perspectives, fostering discussion amongst each other.

Although the author has very interesting ideas within the book, in my opinion, the book is tailored towards secondary education, making it difficult to morph the activities to fit lower grades such as my third-grade class. I do wish the author displayed ideas that fit all grade levels, especially those related to visual ques, as they would be critical in lower grade levels such as kindergarten.

All in all, the first two chapters offers great insight on different activities and how they can be applicable in the classroom. Also, they offer a different perspective on the transition of learning from students and how instruction can change to meet the change of students.

  1. I lean heavily on visuals in the classroom as well. The book does seem geared toward higher education, I can't quite imagine my 6 year old blogging. :P

  2. Throughout the different studies, the response showed the negative effect of how social media is consuming students. It showed that students weren’t able to focus during the class period due to the use of social media. They think if students put their phone away in class that their performance in school will increase. There are many that believe that students should have the opportunity to use social media but only when it is relevant.
