Cognitive Learning Theory

According to AlleyDog, the cognitive learning theory “explains thinking and differing mental processes and how they are influenced by internal and external factors in order to produce learning in individuals” (CITATION). There are three main processes: “observing, categorizing, and forming generalizations about our environment” (CITATION). “A disruption in these natural cognitive processes can cause behavioral problems in individuals and the key to treating these problems lies in changing the disrupted process” (CITATION).

By integrating technology into the classroom, the cognitive learning theory is a great way to allow students to learn information in a separate way, using different methods to explain and deliver information to them.  Social media sites, such as Facebook and Instagram, allows students to observe the content and other related content to the topic of study.  Also, by using these site’s powerful searching tools, students are able to categorize the content they see and therefore organize the content they are learning whether it be in segments or by topic.  Lastly, with the immense reach of social media, students are able to gather as much information about a topic from different perspectives, forming concrete judgements based on the information they receive.

While reading "Cognitive Learning Theory", one section stood out: “Authentic Learning”. This section is a major focus point of cognitive learning theory as it allows students to really grasp and make connections on what they are learning. It invokes different stigma on how to process and understand information without defaulting to the traditional “kill and drill” method. By using real world events and topics, students are better able to connect, and therefore understand and remember, the material as it is presented.
